When John Carter first encounters the Holy Therns, it is at the height of their powers as the leaders of the religion of Issus. They handle weapons well and in later books of the Barsoomian saga are mentioned as fighting men and living among the peoples of the red race.Īncient superstition among all the races of Barsoom suggest that should any Holy Thern fail to reach their allotted 1,000 years of life, their spirit, may on occasion, pass into the bodies of the great white apes. These ex-priests have since taken up other forms of livelihood, usually as panthans, the Barsoomian word for mercenaries. A vigorous race, the Therns played upon the superstitions of the Barsoomian cultures until their power was broken by John Carter. The Holy Therns are missionaries of the living deity Issus and live in the Valley Dor near the Lost Sea of Korus. It is likely these people are related to the ancient Orovars. There is another group of white martians known as the Holy Therns of Barsoom, a bald/hairless race that wears great wigs of yellow hair. in successful operation all but a few of the inhabitants of Barsoom had died.then life became merely a battle for the survival of the fittest." (Our) Scientists were working on an atmosphere plant, but before it was. "The atmosphere became so tenuous that it was difficult to breath. green men overran what had once been fertile farmland, preying upon all. Hungry hordes made war upon the more fortunate. prosperous sea ports became deserted inland cities. "For ages our cities followed the receding waters. What science had predicted was coming to pass - a world was dying. ".the seas began to recede, the atmosphere to grow more tenuous. Ho Ran Kim continued on with the down fall of the race. few in numbers and negligible in importance. Horz was not only the capital of a great empire, it was the seat of learning and culture. A million years ago our ships ranged the five great oceans, which we ruled. "The inhabitants of Horz are, as far as we know, the sole remaining remnant of the once dominate race of Barsoom. Ho Ran Kim, Jeddak of Horz, later explained the Orovarian history to John Carter: Confined by this headdress was a shock of blond hair. These bands were highly ornamented with carving and set with jewels and precious metals. It consisted of a leather band that ran about the head from right to left, and a second from front to rear. (he) wore a headdress which is quite unusual upon Barsoom. but now I saw nothing red Martian about him. His skin was bronzed by exposure to the sun. In "The City of Mummies" (also published as "The Ancient Dead") John Carter described the Orovarian thusly: Horz is the last remaining outpost of this race only a few thousand live in that dead city, which for centuries was thought to be deserted. The original human stock of Mars, this white race built the mighty cities of Korad, Aaanothor and Horz. The white race of Barsoom, the Orovars, are nearly extinct.
